Elephant Ears

This blog is dedicated to the political happenings in the Valley and Southwest Virginia. As the the name implies, this blog will have posts based on what is heard by this elephant's (GOPer's) ears. It is also a great treat to get while at the county fair or a carnival.

Jim Rich Wins

Congratulations to Jim Rich on winning the 10th District Chairman's race.
Hopefully that part of the state can now circle the wagons and get George Allen and Frank Wolf elected. It is very important these people let by-gones be by-gones and work together to try and unite the party. I am not holding my breath though.

As long as you work and help out the campaigns, it shouldnt make much difference what banner you do it under, as long as it gets done.

The Republican party in NoVa seems to have no juice. Would a change up have been such a bad thing? Oh well, I guess we shall see.

I dont think a "change" would have helped.
The problem in the NOVA GOP is that the "moderates" and "conservatives" dont want to work together at all.
Since there are alot of both up there, nothing gets done very well.

Moderates, conservatives...who cares as long as at the end of the day they work together. The problem is that there are a bunch of people who prefer to sit on their butts and talk about all the work that needs to be done and very few actually doing it.

    That is very true VL.
One big problem have have seen, especially with the conservatives is that they have the opinion a democrat is better than a moderate GOP.
When moderate candidates attempt to run, the conservatives threaten to withhold support if they get the nomination.
It seems the moderates may start doing the same thing in NOVA, since they feel their way of thinking is the only one that can win.

The reality in NOVA is that for the past several election cycles conservative candidates (since that's all that was nominated) did nothing more than tap into Patrick Henry College to get help.

If you were not part of that "click" you were ignored.

GOPHokie, I challenge your premise that "conservatives ... have the opinion a democrat is better than a moderate GOP." Certainly, among my Conservative friends, there is no love lost for Tom Davis (I happen to like Tom, and consider him a friend). Yet Tom is happy to work with and even support conservative (he endorsed me in my run for School Board) because, unlike many "MODERATES" of whom I can think, he understands that both groups need to work together. Unlike some "moderates" of whom I can think, he doesn't gratuitously pee in the faces of Conservatives.

Indeed, the greatest problem that I can see in Northern Virginia is that "moderates" feel free to trash publicly Conservatives for all manner of real and perceived offensives --- Vince Thoms' phony "group A" and "group B" distinctions come to mind --- AND to withhold their support like petulaht children when they don't get their way or, even worse, when (Heaven forbid!) conservatives dare to challenge them when they run as Conservative and vote like Liberals. It's despicable.

That would have been a funny line, if it weren't so blatantly false!

James, I have heard some GOPs say a democrat is better than a moderate GOP b/c at least we know what we have got with a dem.
I will agree with your points about the moderates being as much to blame as the conservatives.
Even so, historically moderates hold their noses and vote/support the conservatives. That doesnt usually work in reverse.

I guess my point, GOPHokie, is that I know PLENTY of Conservatives who "hold their nose" and vote for Tom Davis.

And Phil, you probably know about some things that I don't. I frankly concede that I am speaking from personal experience, and that my judgment is obviously colored by that fact.
