Elephant Ears

This blog is dedicated to the political happenings in the Valley and Southwest Virginia. As the the name implies, this blog will have posts based on what is heard by this elephant's (GOPer's) ears. It is also a great treat to get while at the county fair or a carnival.

Town Elections

Blacksburg:
Ron Rordam defeated environmentalist Don Langrehr for the mayor's seat.
On city council, 2 dems and one GOP were elected. Thats about as good as we can hope.
There will now be a special election for Rordam's council seat. No word on when that will be. Hopefully another GOP can win in that special election.

Galax: All dems were elected to city council.

Harrisonburg: Mayor Larry Rogers was handily booted off city council and was replaced by former mayor Carolyn Frank and Ted Byrd was also elected (indys).

Lynchburg: 2 dems and one GOP elected to city council.

Roanoke: The GOP finished 6th and 7th here. All 3 elected were the "independents" endorsed by the Roanoke Chamber of Commerce (they were dems in reality as well).

Staunton: Del. Chris Saxman's challenger from last year, Bruce Elder won a seat on city council here.

I think they are all independents in Lynhcburg, but two of the winners would be considered Dems

In Harrisonburg, Ted Byrd ran as a Republican.

Lots of Democratic gains in western Va, except for Harrisonburg, which was a shocker. No one saw that coming.

Good to see Bruce be able to reuse his signs......makes you wonder if he used the Saxman election for name recognition......

Don't forget Barbara Stafford, Mayor of Pearisburg, a former delegate and widow of the late Delegate Jeff Stafford.

RE: Lynchburg. Yes, Scott Garrett ran as an Independent, as well as the two incumbents Bert Dodson and Joan Foster. Although Dodson and Foster both got the endorsement of the Democratic Party.

i find the conversatoions about Dem/repub. in regard to local election to be silly and stupid...what the differnece, they have to make decision, balance the budget, and be responsibe to their constituints needs, party affliation in regard to local politics is very silly...but to some, this is all that is important...
