Elephant Ears

This blog is dedicated to the political happenings in the Valley and Southwest Virginia. As the the name implies, this blog will have posts based on what is heard by this elephant's (GOPer's) ears. It is also a great treat to get while at the county fair or a carnival.

VCDL Arrogance

Folks, I have been thinking about posting on this for awhile now, but I guess this is a good time.
I don't understand the VCDL's obsession with the Kilgore survey. I have always thought it was dumb for the Kilgore campaign to do nothing about this, but what is the big deal?
Its as if its killing the VCDL that they will have to endorse Kaine since he is the only person to return the survey. I had a member even tell me he knew Kaine's survey was BS, but that they want to see Kilgore's.
Every other organization I have ever seen never cares. If you don't turn in a survey, they give you a ? or rank you on past experience, and usually don't endorse you. Simple as that.
The NRA never makes a federal case out of someone not turning in a survey, why is the VCDL?
The only thing I can figure is that they are so arrogant, they are more worried about getting the surveys than actually making a difference in the election.
Any thoughts from the peanut gallery on this one?

One problem w/ your theory. Kaine will veto them all.
Even VCDL members will tell you he is anything but pro-gun.

One possible way of understanding Kilgore's initial reluctance to fill out the VCDL survey was that he wanted to avoid emphasizing his pro gun positions. But if that was true, why did he just have his whirlwind tour of the state with the NRA in tow?

VCDL is not some fly-by-night organization. It is not just some guy who thought up a good name and registered a web site. We've been around for more than a dozen years. Ask any of your local legislators who comes and talks to them about state gun issues. Occasionally it is the NRA when it is a front page story, but VCDL is lobbying them on EVERY issue that affects guns in the state. They know who Philip Van Cleave is because they see him over and over again.

It made no sense for Kilgore to hide from the survey as if we were some unknown group. It was appalling to say that Philip had no credibility on 2nd amendment issues. I expect politicians to stand up for what they believe not to run and hide.

By the way, I've seen one quote which said that the VCDL survey and the NRA survey are the same so what is the big deal. If that were true (which it is not) what rational politician would avoid filling out the second survey. The problem with the NRA survey is 1) it is on national issues and 2) (here comes the biggie) the responses aren't publisized. Kilgore is hiding and I want to know why.

I agree with you Dorn. I think Kilgore's campaign should have answered the survey, I just don't understand why the VCDL is so vocal about not getting Kilgore's survey.
They are giving Kaine more ammo, even though they say they don't like him either.

The Republican consultants seem to think that compromising gunrights is smart politics.

Kilgore has lost my vote for not firing the staffer who attacked the credability of Philip Van Cleave.

I agree with you that Kaine becoming governor would not be the end of the world with a strongly pro-gun General Assembly. However, that doesn't mean we need to vote for Kaine!

The survey is not an 'end.' It's a 'means' to figuring out where the candidates stand on these very straightfoward questions. Kaine filled out the survery; great, but look at his answers. They're horrible! The survey provides voters with information, so they can make educated decisions on how to vote. As a voter who is very concerned about gun related issues and legislation, I will NOT be supporting Kaine with my vote.

The message to Kilgore is that I don't vote for him either because of his refusal to even answer the survery. And, in fact, to quantify the amount of support he is losing, I will be writing in the VCDL president, Philip Van Cleave, for governor. And if that ends up swinging it to Kaine, that's Kilgore's fault, not mine.

"But on the other hand, why not vote for Kaine? He stood up and answered the survey. If Kilgore is Governor, he will likely ask GOP leaders to ration the bills that come to his desk! If Kaine is Governor, the GOP dominated General Assembly will flood his inbox with pro-gun bills - even if he vetoes 1 or 2, who cares, we will move the ball down the field 3 yards at a time with clouds of dust to boot."
