Elephant Ears

This blog is dedicated to the political happenings in the Valley and Southwest Virginia. As the the name implies, this blog will have posts based on what is heard by this elephant's (GOPer's) ears. It is also a great treat to get while at the county fair or a carnival.

GOP Courting Black Voters

Here is a great editorial on how the GOP can take advantage of the black vote and try to gain more of it. They cite new rising stars in the Republican Party like Condi Rice, Ken Blackwell, Michael Steele, and Lynn Swann as well as the fact that democrats have taken the black vote for granted for so long.
I am not convinced that any strategy will ever bring us a massive percentage of the black vote, but I think its important to show them why many blacks are Republicans and why they should entrust us with their vote.

I hope Blackwell can win in Ohio. His main problem is that Taft has been such a terrible governor and people may not want to give a Republican another shot. I know if I still lived there I would vote for him. And I've been telling my family and friends they should vote for him.

    Blackwell is controversial as well.

There is no worse place in the nation to be running than Ohio this year. You've got corrupt federal lawmakers and a massively unpopular governor. It's going to be a bloodbath.

Centrist is right. Its gonna be a battle up there. Also, it is sure to be a battleground in '08 so both parties will be on the ground trying to setup a grassroots plan for the presidential race.

George Bush has a 2% approval rating among African Americans; Condoleezza rice is even more hated. The fact is that a person’s race doesn’t affect peoples vote, it’s what a person will do in office. African Americans believe in affirmative action, freedom to choice an abortion and not have the government interfere, and fair and equal employment. As long as the Republican Party remains so far right, African Americans will continue to support the party of real American values, The Democratic Party!!!

What bs. The Democrat Party is the party of real American values? I must have missed the memo about American values including sitting around waiting for the government to take care of you. I also must not have noticed when using coathangers and shop vacs on unborn babies became an American values. Nice work posting the talking points though...

Are you telling me the case of DC's Marion Barry isn't a race vote? Am I to believe African Americans elected him because of what he will do in office...cocaine?

NOVADem, I agree that just b/c a candidate is black wont necessarily make blacks vote for them.
I would take issue with the abortion comment. I dont have any numbers to back it up, but I imagine as religious as many blacks are that they would favor outlawing abortion.
As to Marion Barry, thats DC for ya.
