Elephant Ears

This blog is dedicated to the political happenings in the Valley and Southwest Virginia. As the the name implies, this blog will have posts based on what is heard by this elephant's (GOPer's) ears. It is also a great treat to get while at the county fair or a carnival.

GOP Babies

I saw this interesting editorial in the WSJ that makes the arguement that the democratic party is headed for problems due to children. According to the article, conservatives are much more likely to have children (and more of them) than their liberal counterparts.
This seems to be to be surprising since the typical groups with large families, catholics and hispanics, are both seemingly democratic in nature (even though catholics are becoming more Republican). I guess the reason my be that the new breed of democrats in the suburban areas are all professionals who are holding off having children until later, and choosing have less of them when they do.

Some have said that a pro-choice society can't survive, so maybe the same holds true for a political party :)

At any rate, check it out; its a pretty interesting article.

Rumor in Loudon today is that Mark Tate is going to be outed as gay (!). That would explain why he's not helping the GOP/Dem children race (LOL). Seriously, he is going to kill us in our marriage fight when this comes out. The MSM lives for this.

I am not sure how him being gay would hurt the marriage amendment, even if it were true.
Is he so liked by people that they will vote against the amendment b/c of him?

Do you really think that this is significant? Not only do you have to assume a huge difference in child-bearing. But you have to assume that a substantial majority of those children will mimick their parents' politics. The south has shown that that isn't a reliable outcome. In a matter of a generation the region has gone from harcore Dem to hardcore GOP.

Well I actually took it as a joke, but there is some truth in it.
Also, the only difference in the South is party. They have always been socially conservative, only now the dems arent seen as the standard bearer for that.

Good point. Similarly, NoVA has left the GOP because they used to, and no longer, stand for fiscal responsibility and staying out of people's bedrooms.

brimur, that is part of it but I think NOVA goes deeper.
One of the main ways the GOP won over lots of voters through the 80s and 90s was they went to NOVA and said "if we were in power we would give more of your money back and fix your transportation problem".
In reality neither of those things is probably ever going to happen, regardless of who is in power; so the party out of power will use that against the party in power.
We are now seeing the GOP be cruified in NOVA partially b/c they are in power and arent getting thing done for NOVA.
The reason we have held on to some seats is b/c NOVA realizes that the dems cant get them anywhere unless the dems takes the majority.
