Elephant Ears

This blog is dedicated to the political happenings in the Valley and Southwest Virginia. As the the name implies, this blog will have posts based on what is heard by this elephant's (GOPer's) ears. It is also a great treat to get while at the county fair or a carnival.

Warner for Governor?

In light of yesterday's news coverage where Mark Warner said he was not running for president in 2008; many in the blogosphere have suggested he will now be setup to run for governor again in 2009. This certainly makes sense, since that has widely been seen as his alternative plan if he did not succeed in 2008.

Heres my question, is he really going to be that unbeatable? I realize he has high approval ratings now, but what can he now do to stay in the news? I always thought he would be unbeatable for governor if he ran for president and didn't succeed, because he would be in the news all the time for his presidential run. Now that he has sidelined that, what will gain him media coverage?

Also, there are several other people looking to run for governor on the dem side. Not being in the party, I was just wondering if people like Brian Moran, Creigh Deeds and Chap Petersen would step aside to let Warner have the nomination; or if it would be a bitter fight.

Just wondering what everyone else's thoughts are on this.

I truly believe that McDonnell is well positioned for the primary and for a general election against Warner or any dem. He is the guy to return the GOP to the Governor’s mansion.

Abby Road, I agree 100%. I venture to say that McDonnell could be the only Republican that can take on Mark Warner and WIN. Why? Not only does the AG have a great record of accomplishments on real issues in the House, but he also is a great Attorney General. He is making headlines almost every day with real news that affects average Virginians. Mark Warner might be the press darling, but McDonnell is getting things done… that will pay off in the long run. With the record he is buiding, he won’t be scared of a fight against Warner. Additionally, he has connections in Northern Virginia & Tidewater. Regardless, whatever happens here it won’t be done because of Warner’s decision to run or not to run. He has a strong base, geographic advantages, and is working hard on big issues every day for real Virginians. I believe he is the man to beat for the GOP nod.

I think Bolling is done if Warner runs… But McDonnell? He can be competitive against the former Gov.

Anon 3:36 - I disagree. Not all the Rs are "roadkill." I continue to maintain that McDonnell is the ONLY R that can take him on and win.

Well looks like the McDonnell crowd is out in force today :)

Also, is it still true that Warner is disliked in some circles in NOVA? I knew that was the case before he ran, I dont know about now.

Anyone who thinks McDonnell would even be able to carry Warner's lunch is on some kind of drugs that I would like to be introduced to. Taliban Bob barely won. Had the votes actually been re counted, he may well not have been elected at all. We will never know. But bottom line, when Bobby did his best and barely won with just a hair over 50%, Warner was close to 80% approval rating. At the exact same time..........
If Mark Warner wants a seat or position in VA, all he has to do is show up.........

McDonnell could barely beat Creigh Deeds.

How in the hell does anyone think he could come anywhere near Mark FREAKIN' Warner?
