What a Surprise
The DNR has reported that the Valley Family Forum debate will not be rescheduled. Fulk's schedule is "totally booked up until election day".
This does not surprise me. I never expected Fulk to reschedule this debate.
Also, to the second letter to editor today in the DNR, do you pick the car that goes the wrong direction? Thats what you are doing by voting for Lowell Fulk. I'd rather have a car that gizzles gas and only runs 62.5% of the time than having one that doesn't go the direction I want it to go.

I told you the article was coming.
Brandon, back in May, Lowell challenged Matt to seven debates. Matt said his schedule was full and that the planned debates were enough. When I asked if Matt would do a debate with myself moderating, Audrey said the schedule was full. Why don't you talk about the numerous debates Matt has missed.(around 5) Andrea has spoken twice for Matt, and they tried to get the Nurses Association to let Audrey speak on Matt's behalf. Quit trying to blow this up.

Are you as shallow to believe that Lowell can't fit an hour into his schedule? You know Fulk COULD do this debate but he has CHOSEN not to...he is LIBERAL when it comes to SOCIAL issues...you know it so end the spin.
Why in the world would either canidate schedule a debate with you? You are so biased so get over your BAd Self.

I've heard Lowell set a debate with WHSV (new debate) but backed out of the Family Forum one?
No big surprise to anyone Lowell is afraid to answer those difficult questions...really answer any of the questions for that matter.

If debates should be honored...What about Matt?
Fulk has given his answers on partial birth abortion and gay Marriage. It's what Matt is running on.

Fulk has answered all the social issue questions. He has not hidden his positions. He got sick and couldn't show up. What excuse does Lohr have for all the candidate forum's he's missed. Is Lohr hiding his position on health care because he missed the Nurse's Forum?
Come on people, lets not play games.
Could Fulk reschedule if he really wanted to? yes
Is the Family Family Forum a non-partisan organization that would ever support a democrat? No
Does Fulk missing one forum change the fact that Lohr has missed substantially more? No
Does it change any of FUlk's stated positions? No
What incentive does Fulk have to go to the FFF when they would never support him? virtually none

CAlling Fulk "liberal" on social issues demonstrates an obvious lack of any sense of balance on this issue.
Fulk opposes gay marriage but thinks an amendment is unnecessary.
Fulk believes that abortion can be reduced by creating a "culture of life," i.e. giving mothers the support they need to have babies and making adoption a better option.
These are hardly "liberal" positions.
Try imagining a compromise position on these gay marriage and abortion, because that by definition is the moderate position. And not that far off from Fulk's

I am truly confounded as to why Fulk would skip the VFF. I think of the Forum as far-right wingers, and Fulk has no votes to gain or lose by participating in their debate, but still the Forum represents a sizable portion of the local citizenry.
That said, I don't think Fulk's hiding anything, much less any liberal positions. He's not far right. That doesn't make him liberal, as pro-life Dem said so well in the above posts. Get over it!!!
And I wish the anonymous posters here and on Republitarian would adopt consistent blogging names. That way you're anonymous, but your fellow blog posters get a sense of who they're talking to. For all I know it's the same dude or dudette over and over. Obviously a single anon poster could adopt several names and it would still be the same dude or dudette over and over, but if you're just going to be snarky (well thought-out posts tend to have names attached to them), at least be creative enough to give yourself a name. It's part of playing nice and being taken seriously in blogland.

I just think, like with all debates, not being there is worse than being there and screwing up.
If Fulk doesn't show up, the Lohr campaign can hammer him for being liberal on social issues and he won't have a rebuttal.
If he went, he could say "hey here is what I said at the VFF debate".
At 10/10/2005 5:40 PM, Anonymous said…
Fulk has no clear position on the majority of social issues. He plays the typical Dem with the "I feel your pain" nonsense.
At 10/10/2005 7:36 PM, GOPHokie said…
Exactly. Thats why social issues will be the main thing on this election.
Neither side has any specific issues to talk about with specific answers.
Its going to be Lohr's attendance record vs. Fulk's liberalness on social issues.
Whichever one reverberates more will determine the winner.
At 10/10/2005 8:34 PM, Anonymous said…
Does "no clear position" mean one not in agreement with your position?
What has Fulk been unclear about?
At 10/10/2005 9:16 PM, Anonymous said…
for the last time
Fulk's clear positions
gay marriage amendment uneecessary (already illegal)
wants to reduce abortions (can't outlaw it unless the supremes do or there is a constitutional amendment)
my god, how much clearer can he be. the fact remains that a delegate can do very little about either of these issues and what can be done has been.
it is not social issues that separate the candidates, thats like saying what separated the skins from the broncos was the number of home runs
At 10/10/2005 9:26 PM, Anonymous said…
WRONG again...what you are saying Delegates have no control why vote anyway.
LOWELL FULK IF ELECTED WILL CAST A VOTE ON ISSUES LIKE LIFE AND MARRIAGE...GET THAT IN YOUR THICK HEADS.
Partial Birth abortion everyone knows is barbaric= easy out for pro-choice canidate.
Marriage AMendment Comes up for VOTE and VA must stand up for Marriage as a\n institution...its pointless to say its already illegal...hell drugs are illegal but we have to contiunue to strenghthen laws to fight them.
By the way read your constitution and you will see why Va needs a marriage Amendment...you liberals ask a conservative friend if you can borrrow a copy.

Maybe I'm a bit dense here, but if there are other debates scheduled between then and now, can't anyone that would have attended the VFF debate merely go to another one and ask whatever question s/he might have asked there? Also, it seems dumb of Fulk to not reschedule a debate he missed because that seems to rob him of his ability to hammer home the idea that "Lohr missed meetings" because now Fulk missed an important debate. Lastly, Fulk's answers make his positions clear, he is pro-choice and not in favor of an anti gay marriage ammendment. Saying "we dont' need one" is the same as saying you're not going to support one. It's too bad he can't just be a man about it and say "These are my positions on these issues."

Great post anon. The primary reason Fulk should have addressed the VFF debate is that when the DNR did a write up about it, it would have specifically talked about the social issues.
These issues may be brought up at other debates, but they won't be the focus of other debates like this one would have.

I have read the Constitution, I believe the clause you are refering to is the Full Faith and Credit Clause, which requires states to respect the laws of other states. However, since the founding of our nation, this did not apply to laws of one state that violate the public policy of another. I.e. a gambling debt in Vegas cannot be enforced in Virginia because gambling is against Virginia's public policy. With out a doubt the fact that gay marriage is illegal in Virginia is clear evidence that it is against VA's public policy. This is well settled law for over 200 years.
Your other point is that Fulk will have to vote on these issues. Yes, he will and he will vote against the amendment because it is pointless. If something is illegal and then you pass a law and it is still illegal with no additional penalties that is the definition of pointless. You would thik a conservative would be interested in not wasting government resources.
Abortion, what restriction is being proposed. There aren't any left. Partial-Birth is all that he could vote for.
I do believe social issues are important. They just don't matter in this particular case. No one has made the case on this blog for how Fulk would vote differently than Lohr on abortion and no one here or anywhere can make the case that the gay marriage amendment is necessary.

The Gay Marriage issue...coming to a Supreme Court near you.
At 10/11/2005 4:04 PM, GOPHokie said…
Just for clarification, what has Fulk ever proposed to curb abortions?
You guys talk about it, but I have never seen a specific program that is supposed to do that.
pro-life dem, the marriage amendment is needed to ensure courts in Virginia never change the law, its pre-emptive action. Us GOPs like pre-emptive actions as opposed to post-situation action, as you already know from the war in Iraq.

Yeah, and that one's working well, isn't it?
At 10/12/2005 9:01 AM, Anonymous said…
hokie,
you live in a fantasy world if you think that the Virginia Supreme Court (dominated by Republican appointees) would ever overturn the defense of marriage act. Again regardless of how Lohr or Fulk votes, abortion will still be legal and gay marriage will remain illegal. This is politics of division where none exists and you are playing into it. We will never address problems that can be fixed (like medicaid, transportation, etc) if we spend time on issues that aren't going to change
anon 2:48,
my point exactly, the SC will make the call and there is nothing Matt Lohr and Lowell Fulk can do about it.
At 10/12/2005 11:31 AM, GOPHokie said…
And what are the campaign stances on those other issues?
These social issues are the only thing people can vote on b/c thats the only issues we know where people stand on.
I have yet to hear Fulk or Lohr have one specific plan for anything.
I don't know why everyone thinks Fulk is a "dream candidate". Hes liberal on social issues and doesn't have a plan, just like every other democrat.
At 10/12/2005 1:48 PM, Anonymous said…
hokie,
you are making my point. the reason no one talks about these issue is that they are crowded out by the social issues. That makes sense at the National level where the president and senate actually have a say in who sits on the SC and therefore how these issues will be dealt with. This is not the case for delegate. But here we are arguing over this issue even though we know it won't change anything.
btw no one has told me how whoever our elected delegate is, would actually be able to change anything related to these issues.
At 10/12/2005 5:38 PM, GOPHokie said…
Well I still continue to think we need the marriage amendment, but you dont, so we have a difference of opinion.
I say we need to make sure its always illegal, you say it will be anyway.
At 10/13/2005 8:54 AM, Anonymous said…
my question is why do we need an amendment? I don't see the purpose because the only way for it to change now would overturn the amendment as well.
My bigger point is that on the scale of issues that matter, this can't be very high. Nonetheless it get so much attention that the political debate is cheapened because all the candidates do is sloganeering.
At 10/13/2005 10:57 AM, GOPHokie said…
Well if you think about it, what are the major issues facing the valley?
I-81 expansion, both candidiates oppose STAR Solutions, at least in part.
The economy is good.
Both think we need to fix the eminent domain thing.
As for taxes, Fulk supported the tax increase and says he would consider supporting more. Lohr opposed the last one and opposes further hikes.
Thats basically all the non-social issues out there.
