Elephant Ears

This blog is dedicated to the political happenings in the Valley and Southwest Virginia. As the the name implies, this blog will have posts based on what is heard by this elephant's (GOPer's) ears. It is also a great treat to get while at the county fair or a carnival.

Senate Democrat Strategy

The Washington Times has released the Senate democrats' strategy plan for the upcoming '06 elections. It includes staged town hall events at military bases, weapons factories and other national security related facilities. They also plan to have both American and state flags at the events and have someone to do the pledge.

I have only one question, how will the dems convince any Republicans to do the pledge at these events. They will have to find our guys to do it, b/c they don't agree with it. The only thing they do with the American flag is burn it. Why not have staged ceremonies for that?

Do you actually believe that even .1% of Democrats have ever burned the flag or hate the pledge, or are you joking?

I am obviously kidding, but they seem to always defend the flag burners and the pledge haters.

Does anyone believe that even .1 percent of Democrats are angered by flag burning and pledge hating?

I am angered by the deficit, the war, the terrible government response (at all levels) to Katrina, the way Virginia can't come up with a budget in its alloted time because the House of Delegates is full of babies who'd rather joke on the House floor about Jack Reid's gun than WORK, and the way we keep cutting taxes for the rich at the expense of programs that serve the poor.

Real issues. That's what I get fired up about. I think some people go nutty over flags and pledges rather than think about things that affect daily life.

I am angered by a governor and senators that want to raise taxes when there is a surplus, thats why the HOD cant pass a budget.
Agreed on the tax cuts (unless its the estate tax) and the deficit.

    GOP Hokie:

You seem like a nice person, so I'm not going to come down to hard on you for this awful slander against Democrats. And, pulling the Ann Coulter routine that it was just a joke doesn't take care of it. Last year, the Prince William County Democratic Committee attended a Potomac Nationals game as part of a fund raiser. Our then County Chairman, Rick Coplen, met a young Republican enthusiast who, in what was supposed to be a joke, said he was surprised that so many Democrats stood for the National Anthem rather than spitting at the flag. This young man was, I hope at least, somewhat taken aback by his remark when he learned that not only was Mr. Coplen himself a retired Army veteran, USMA graduate and twenty years in service with several over seas deployments, but that his wife, also a USMA graduate, was at that very moment preparing for deployment to Iraq as a brigade commander. The Coplens have two young daughters. I really believe that most peole who take the time to get involved with either parties are patriots who believe in this country. And, as for flag burners, I agree, they are jerks. However, I'll be damned if I'll let a bunch of idots like that force us to amend the first amendment. I love the flag, but I also love the Constitution.

Anon, it looks pretty dumb when dems have a gathering on one week pledging allegience to the flag and the next week the dems are protesting burning the flag.
Certainly not all dems hate America, but if you guys dont reign in the ones who do, they are going to sink your party.
