Elephant Ears

This blog is dedicated to the political happenings in the Valley and Southwest Virginia. As the the name implies, this blog will have posts based on what is heard by this elephant's (GOPer's) ears. It is also a great treat to get while at the county fair or a carnival.

New Caucus Chair

NLS reported yesterday that Steve Landes has stepped down as GOP House Caucus Chairman, which means we now have to find his replacement. Ben reported that Terry Kilgore was the frontrunner for the job, and he voiced concern that someone more like Chris Saxman would be a better choice.

I have seen or heard that there are several people in the running including John Cosgrove, Sam Nixon and Tim Hugo as well as Kilgore and maybe even Saxman.

I obviously am a big fan of Saxman so I would be supportive of him getting the job. He would also pick right up where Landes was being that they are from neighboring districts in Augusta County.

I have talked to Cosgrove at both the gala and the advance, and I think he knows what is going on and has some good ideas as well. He is also from a relatively safe GOP district in hampton roads, so he could be able to help campaign around the state if he so chose.

My biggest concern for having Kilgore as caucus chair is that he is the furthest away of anyone in the whole state and I don't know how effective he could be at helping with other campaigns. Also, with Morgan Griffith being from Salem; our caucus already has a SWVa guy in the leadership.

Conversely, someone like Tim Hugo would be good being from NOVA except that he will probably begin to have tough races himself; making it hard for him to campaign elsewhere.

What is everyone else's take on this situation?

UPDATE: Sounds like Terry Kilgore is the guy.

Hugo would be great, but obviously I'm biased. He race might not be as tough with no gov candidate bringing out the vote.

The best choice for the entire commonwealth, however, is John Consgrove. He really has it together and seems to understand the entire state.

Kilgore's fine, too. During '05, I actually got the impression that Terry was a bit brighter and more personable than Jerry. I don't discount what he can do to help NOVA just becasue he's from SW. He saw what happened to his brother, and nobody knows better about the need to recruit good candidates for NOVA. Terry seems more politcally astute than Jerry.

I believe Terry would be able to campaign and raise money for the rest of the caucus effectively. Terry is very personable, smart, has leadership skills and is a lot different from Jerry - it's the Moustache.

GOPHOKIE- Who the hell picks these people? Who?! Terry freakin Kilgore!? Why o' why do we pander to Southwest? Why to the Kilgores? This man is a twin of Jerry, A TWIN, thus everything from there head to their toes is identical- their brain capacity and intellect included. What in the world will TK (not Tim Kaine) possibly offer to overcome Republican losses in NoVa and Hampton Roads? He'll recruit more Jerry Kilgores and Bill Bollings to run for elective office. What advice will he offer in the transportation debate- is there a paved road in his district? Who chooses these people? Who looks at someone like Terry Kilgore and says "wow- that guys got talent, that guys going places, and that guy is the guy that is going to lead the VAGOP House to the promise land"? Revoke that person membership to the GOP.

And folks wonder why the GOP are losing both the House and Senate in 2007.

I'm going to get on VPAP and search 'Jerry Lewis', because he must be the only person that financially supports the retard who selected Terry Kilgore.

The caucus itself picks, but it sounds like TK was the only one who ran for the job.
Call up your nearest GOP delegate and ask why they didn't run and/or nominate someone else.
Course at this point, thats all moot.

Chris Saxman would be a great choice. He is way ahead of the game when it comes to marketing. He understands technology. And, he's pretty well known throughout the state. He's a dynamic individual--he can rally the voters and he knows the issues.

I'm biased of course--he is my delegate, but I think they should look closely at Chris. However, I don't know how this will effect the Cost Cutting Caucus.

Well I agree, but Kilgore is going to be the man.
