Elephant Ears

This blog is dedicated to the political happenings in the Valley and Southwest Virginia. As the the name implies, this blog will have posts based on what is heard by this elephant's (GOPer's) ears. It is also a great treat to get while at the county fair or a carnival.

Dream Ticket for '09?

In the past, many have argued that statewide candidates have regional strength, and that building a strong regional ticket can be the key to victory. While I do not fully subscribe to this theory, it certainly has its advantages.

I bring this up b/c of a few of our potential candidates for 2009. A ticket of Bob McDonnell-Bill Bolling-Ken Cuccinelli would be a slam dunk for the regional perspective. We would have all 3 major metro areas of the state, and have candidates from the more conservative parts of those three. This would (if you believe in this theory) drive turnout in the conservative areas that have high population. This coupled with the naturally conservative areas like the Valley and SWVA, would seemingly deliver a big victory to the GOP on election night 2009.
With the prospect of Jay O'Brien running for LG, that even further compounds the strength of this potential ticket. Cooch is from the Centreville area in western Fairfax County while O'Brien represented parts of western Fairfax and Prince William County and is from Clifton. These 2 Senate districts are the strongest (relatively) GOP areas of Fairfax County and could potentially prevent the Republicans from getting romped in the county. As an added bonus, McDonnell grew up in the Mount Vernon area, so he could also have some pull too.

The other reason this would be so strong a ticket is the House races downticket. It is likely that the most competitive races in the HOD in 2009 will be the Va Beach seats (new dems and the GOP retirements), the Fairfax seats (Rust, Caputo, Hugo, Albo) and PWC (Marshall, Frederick, Nichols). This ticket would give us a a good regional advantage in all those seats.

Obviously there are alot of holes in this theory, but I would like to see what everyone thinks about this prospect.

I like that ticket.... We need Bill to keep a lid on the Senate.. They can be such children... they treat their parents (tax paying citizens) like we are some kind of ATM machine....

They can't figure out how to bloat govt. faster even with an economy that doubles their revenues in only 10 years!

That would be a solid ticket... imagine the look on the Dems faces if that ticket swept in 09'... How could they possibly spin that?

Oh, that's right, they lost LG and AG in VA 05' (net loss of one state wide seat) and still declared it a victory....

This is good stuff. I was very impressed with McDOnnell this weekend - first time I had met him. He's definitely got "Governor" written all over him and has what we need to take back the mansion in 09. He's principled and electable.

We need a strong guy like Bolling to keep the senate under control and Cooch will continue the good work of Republican AGs.

plust he regional dynamics present a strong opportunity for us.

As always, you've done your homework and have come up with a well thought-out GOP dream ticket. With no disrespect to other possible candidates out there, your reasoning is strong and the candidates are proven winners with statewide as well as regional appeal.

It was good to talk with you at the Advance....

GOPHokie: I agree with you 100% that this would be a solid Dream Ticket.

Bob McDonnell has shown that he can lead the Commonwealth. As many of you may have seen my "Run Bob Run" Governor 2009 buttons this weekend at the Advance, I think he is the man for the job. I saw quite a few folks wearing my buttons this weekend and they support Bob all the way.

As you mentioned, I like that the AG grew up in Fairfax County and attended Bishop Ireton High School in Alexandria, then moved to Virginia Beach where he lived and won elections for over 20 years. As we all know, he now resides with his family in Richmond-Central Virginia as our Attorney General.

Bob McDonnell's deep roots to what I call Virginia's Urban Crescent (NoVa-Richmond-Hampton Roads) takes the fight directly to the Democrat nominee. I could not agree with you more that we can not ignore northern Virginia. As a counterpunch, the Democrats may very well nominate Del. Brian Moran (D-Alexandria) and Fairfax County Board of Supervisors Chairman Gerald Connolly as Lt. Governor. This would demonstrate that we have to fight even harder for northern Virginia.

With solid support in the Republican-strongholds of the Valley, Southwest and Southside, I am confident that the Attorney General would lead our ticket to a win in 2009. If Lt. Gov. Bolling was willing to run for re-election, this would further bolster our case in Southwest and Hanover solidifying the ticket.

In July 2003, I jumped on the Bob McDonnell campaign for Attorney General train. With that background now in December 2007, I must say it is not too early to plant the flag for victory in 2009 and for what we believe in (Pro-Economic Growth and Jobs, Pro-Life, Anti-Tax, Pro-Family and Pro-Second Amendment).

I have learned first hand through my work for Fred Thompson's 2008 Presidential run as a volunteer that a late start can cause both tremendous excitement and heartburn. Start early, start now.

Beyond geography, the Attorney General has done a lot for Virginia and showed his compassionate and human side by serving the hungry and protecting the environment. We all know him as tough on crime, tough on child predators and tough on gangs, but he also started the first-ever AG-sponsored Legal Food Frenzy tis year where he along with Virginia law firms worked with Food Banks from all over the Commonwealth to donate food to the hungry. Recently, the Attorney General also won a major victory for a cleaner environment in the Shenandoah Valley (in Rockingham County). Thirteen months of legal action ended with the successful sale and rehabilitation of a wastewater treatment plant responsible for chronically polluting the Chesapeake Bay watershed and residential neighborhoods. This guy is a winner.

Too often, Republicans ignore the environment, the poor and the hungry. These issues matter to the independents in northern Virginia and Tidewater. When we ignore human issues, it helps the Democrats make the argument that we are just "mean" or "angry" Republicans and don't care. We care and the AG has demonstrated it.

The Attorney General's record and his first principles show that he can appeal to a much "bigger tent" than just conservatives like myself. Independents can identify with him and support him. As we have learned, just saying you are for lower taxes is no longer a recipe to win statewide.

These are just a few of the reasons why I believe Bob McDonnell would be a winner at the top of our 2009 ticket.

    Neil

I like this dream ticket! My only concern would be losing a leader like the Cooch in the Senate...but I love a McDonnell/Bolling ticket for Gov/Lt. Gov

Bill is the perfect guy to keep tabs on the Senate...which is MORE important since the RATS control it now....

I couldn't agree more that this would be a powerhouse team in 09'. Bob McDonnell-Bill Bolling-Ken Cuccinelli are all true statesmen and can put Virginia back in the RIGHT hands where it belongs.

The real dream team would be Allen/Bolling/McDonnell.
I know geography is is important but Cooch is just not well known and not ready for prime time.

Sorry 3:59 but former governor Allen could never win after the last election debacle

I'd like to see an Allen rematch with Webb.... Virginians will be willing to repent soon enough... and of course Allen is still a Strong Conservative...

That campaign just went to heck and a handbasket!

I can't believe Bolling is even being mentioned in the same sentence as dream team...must be talking about some dream team other than statewide

Bolling does not want to be number 2 on the ticket. And Cuccinelli is a nut job who barely hung onto to his own seat. There are more attactive people than him for AG.

McDonnell and his Regent Law cronies deserve nothing more than to exit the political scene with their conservative ideals in check as detached from the public's desires. McDonnell has destroyed the Attorney General's office by making it hyper political rather than a functional asset to state government. I would never vote for or consider a Regent Law Graduate or an attorney general with a track record of failure.

George Allen destroyed his political future and is never to emerge again...McDonnell is a frightening individual who would pack state government with incompetents and seek to serve Regent University ... Didn't we learn this lesson with the US Attorney General? Republicans are so detached from reality with promises to never "tax" as road repairs go ignored, etc. I think the people realize one thing, McDonnell, Allen, and Gilmore truly have done nothing for the Commonwealth other than serve their own interests blindly while making destructive political decisions. There is dirt on McDonnell, including keeping a fellow Regent Law Graduate on his staff after the same was involved in at least two high profile scandals while elected to the school board...

Before we start pontificating on upsetting the apple cart on the '09 G.O.P. ticket, we must come with a decent message and make the College Republicans effective again.

The trouble is, CRFV leadership is inept with no sense of moral rectitude.

Current Chairman Samantha Bradshaw has a power-hungry tendency to push other people out of her way for her own gain based on irrational fears. She failed to keep the former secretary informed on when the meetings were, he naturally could not show up for meeting of which he was not aware, and the was summarily impeached. This was an obvious setup for failure. It turns out the secretary was a personal friend of Bradshaw's ex-boyfriend and this petty act is proof positive Miss Bradshaw cannot separate her personal grievances from her professional life.

As bad as that was, former Treasurer Josh Leggette was falsely accused by the Bitely regime of embellishing federation funds for his personal use during the 2007 CRFV. Mr. Leggette got an apology for the accusations, but where do you go to get your reputation back? Under Adam Bitely's watch, impulse trumped reason and the inmates ran the asylum. Then Bitely resigned from the CRFV in order to work for a presidential campaign and left Virginia altogether to campaign in Colorado. This leave of absence was short-lived as Bitely moved back to Virginia after only a few weeks. Worst of all, the CRFV has done NOTHING during the past election cycle. It seems to me if the leadership had devoted all the time and effort in counteracting the highly active Democrats as they did on backstabbing or political infighting, Republicans might have been much more successful in making Virginia's youth vote more competitive.

The Democrats could have hardly done a better job sabotaging the youth Republican movement than its own leadership. With that kind of ineptitude and lack of a moral compass, is there any wonder the Democrats won the Virginia youth vote by so much?
